Signal Drop: Your Project Board Just Laid Off 20% of Its Staff

monday.com just cut 620 positions to fund its AI pivot while carrying a 0.6% operating margin. Zoom is adding AI features to a platform growing at 4.4%. UiPath dropped 15% after OpenAI entered its market. Every tool this community uses to coordinate work is going through a strategic identity crisis at the same time.

Week 4: The Workflow and Community Layer

monday.com just cut approximately 620 positions, roughly 20% of its entire workforce, to redirect investment toward what it calls its "AI Work Platform." The stock is down about 50% year to date. Earnings land August 10. For a community that coordinates work across project boards, task trackers, and workflow tools every day, this is not an abstract restructuring story. It is a signal about what happens when the tools you use to organize your work decide they need to become something else.

The numbers behind the cut tell a specific story. monday.com grew revenue 26.8% last year with an 89.1% gross margin. Those are strong numbers. But the operating margin is 0.6%. Nearly everything the company earns gets spent on sales, research, and administration before it reaches the bottom line. Free cash flow growth came in at only 4.8%, well behind revenue growth. The company is generating cash, but not fast enough to fund the AI pivot it believes it needs to survive. So it is cutting people instead.

This matters for builders because it is not just monday.com. The entire workflow layer is going through the same identity crisis simultaneously. Zoom is adding AI revenue accelerator features to a meeting platform growing at 4.4%. UiPath just took a 15% stock hit after OpenAI launched a product that competes directly with its automation platform. Every tool this community uses to coordinate, meet, automate, and track work is either stagnating, getting disrupted, or restructuring to chase AI. Those are not independent events. They are the same force hitting the same layer from different angles.

The question worth raising on the next call: When the companies behind your coordination tools are cutting staff and pivoting strategy, how resilient is your workflow if the product you depend on changes direction, reprices, or deprioritizes the features you actually use?
